Ev Çalışması Merkezi — AI Homework Platform for Erkan Ulu Schools
An AI homework platform in use at Özel Beşiktaş Erkan Ulu Ortaokulu, a private middle school in Istanbul, since May 2026. Students upload photos of handwritten homework; each question is marked and explained, and teachers see the whole class.
Inside the Platform
The Turkish interface, shown with invented sample data and demo accounts. Select any screen to open it at full size.
No real student names, student work or school usage figures appear on this page.
The Problem
Homework is done by hand, on paper. Turning it into useful feedback for each student and a clear picture for each teacher takes more than a final score.
Real Paper, Real Photos
Work arrives as phone photos or PDFs of handwritten pages, so the system has to read real handwriting from real photos.
Feedback per Question
Each question needs its own verdict and explanation, with partial credit when a multi-part answer is only partly right.
Teachers Stay in Charge
Teachers review the AI's verdicts, and a teacher's override always wins.
The Whole Class at a Glance
Teachers need class results, progress against curriculum outcomes and who has handed in.
What Was Built
One platform for students and teachers, designed, built and operated end to end.
Question-by-Question Marking
Reads phone photos or PDFs and marks each question correct, wrong or partly correct against the teacher's answer key, with partial credit on multi-part questions. A teacher's override always wins.
Parallel Practice
Homework questions come with AI-generated parallel practice questions; in the first five weeks of the 2026–27 school year, every one did. Students solve them by hand on screen, and the AI reads the working and gives hints before showing the solution.
Teacher Panel
Class results, a curriculum-outcome heat map, review of AI verdicts, and hand-in tracking with reminder e-mails.
AI-Built Lessons (Pilot)
Interactive science lessons built by AI, which teachers review and edit before publishing to a class.
Reward Island (Pilot)
A 3D island (WebGPU, built on the open-source Tidewater game) where watched videos and practice attempts earn rewards. Read the Gelgit Adası case.
School Portal Sync
Class rosters sync with the school portal.
Engineering Highlights
An AI grading pipeline that teachers can check and correct.
- AI grading pipeline — reads handwritten work from photos or PDFs and grades on a 100-point scale with partial credit on sub-parts.
- Teacher review and override — the AI's verdicts can be reviewed in the teacher panel, and a teacher's override always wins.
- Handwriting on screen — practice answers are written by hand on the device and read by the AI, which hints before revealing the solution.
- Split services — a Next.js web app on Vercel, a FastAPI API and a separate worker on Render, and Supabase Postgres.
- Gemini and Claude models — power the platform's AI features.
- Roster sync — students and classes come from the school portal.
- Steady delivery — 1,900+ commits since March 2026, with production data repairs and a feedback loop with teachers.

Technology Stack
Status
- March 2026 — platform development starts.
- May 2026 — the first students use the platform.
- 1 September 2026 — grades 5–8 start the 2026–27 school year on the platform.
- October 2026 — live and in use at the school; AI lessons and the reward island are in pilot.
Role: Savaş Tutumlu is the sole engineer and product owner. He designed, built and operates the platform end to end: product design, AI grading pipeline, web app and API, infrastructure, production data repairs and the feedback loop with teachers.
Earlier Tools for the Same School
- May 2025 — an answer-sheet reader that turns photos of multiple-choice tests into results in the school portal; the prototype was started with a collaborator. See the case study.
- March–June 2026 — an LGS Turkish question generator for teachers (prototype).
- August 2026 — a timetable system replacing aSc Timetables, with PDF timetables e-mailed to teachers.
- September 2026 — Otocropper, an offline Mac app that cuts questions out of scanned question-bank PDFs.
